FAQs

Why self-pay instead of insurance?

Opting out of managed care systems offers clients increased autonomy over how, when, and with whom their personal health information, including mental health diagnoses, is shared. It also ensures that these external care systems do not dictate a client’s course of treatment. This allows care decisions, such as length of treatment, to be made collaboratively and exclusively by the client and their clinician. Additionally, the reduction in additional administrative demands allows the clinician to focus on providing quality and individualized care to their clients. Empowered Growth RVA’s use of an equitable pay scale allows us to offer the benefits of self-pay services while maintaining as much accessibility as possible.

What about out-of-network (OON) billing?

To utilize OON benefits, a client will first need to contact their insurance company to determine what benefits are available to them. If a client has and would like to utilize OON benefits, Empowered Growth RVA can either file the OON claim to the client’s insurance on their behalf, or supply the client with a superbill for the client to submit directly to their insurance company themselves. Please note that if a client utilizes OON billing services, the benefits listed above regarding opting out of managed care systems no longer apply. This page offers additional information regarding OON billing.

How should I choose my rate on the pay scale?

A note from Kat:

I want to acknowledge that conversations about finances, particularly regarding access to financial resources, can be very uncomfortable and have the potential to trigger a wide range of negative narratives. As a clinical social worker, I approach this work from a person-in-environment perspective, which highlights the impact of external systems on an individual’s functioning. If you attend sessions with me long enough, you’ll most likely hear me ask the question, “Who benefits?” when exploring how some of these systems might be influencing your choices or perceptions. In this case, I believe that not having open conversations about our individual financial needs only benefits the systems that seek to reinforce financial inequity. I’m challenging myself to be open with my clients about the role payment plays in the clinician/client relationship, and I hope my clients will challenge themselves to be open with me about their needs and experience.
